Washington Reed is a two piece Basement Blues Rock band spearheading what is being talked up as the NU Era of Blues. The band from Chester features Tom Kerr on drums with front man and lead instrumentalist James Martin handling the melodies and lyrics.
They band have recently been featured on BBC Radio Two’s Dermot O’Leary show as well as securing regular slots on BBC Radio Stoke Introducing.
Their debut single ‘Money’ saw the band receiving widespread praise for both the song quality and the accompanying stylistic video.
Comparisons with the White Stripes are inevitable; with both artists boiling down to three essential ingredients; guitar, drums and vocals.
With Martin’s soulfully emotional vocals, instantly memorable guitar riffs, Kerr’s metronome precise drumming and their cool as a cucumber look, Washington Reed incorporates all the elements necessary for the soon to be next big thing.
Though the band follow a basic blues formula their desire to push the boundaries sees them equally at home incorporating ipads and samplers into their music as traditional guitars and drums. Their willingness to experiment has given their tunes a fresh vibrant feel that brings the blues smack up to date.
Washington Reed are definitely not to be underestimated or missed.
